The beginnings of cinema in Turkey go back to approximately a year after
the Lumiére brothers gave their first cinematographic show on December
22, 1895. Turks were introduced to this fabulous art in the Palace and
a beer hall in Istanbul.
Although cinema came early to Turkey, film-making as such came along
at a much later date. After 1914, when the first film was made in Turkey,
Turkish cinema encountered many difficulties. Today it has reached its
present level and proved itself through its own skills and efforts and
has its own identity, earned after struggling through years of economic
hardship and legal shortcomings. It furthermore had to overcome stiff
foreign competition at every level, and only through the united wholehearted
efforts of directors, script writers, artists and other personnel has
Turkish cinema reached its present distinguished level, time and again
proving its worth at international film festivals as a contemporary
and modern industry.
