Social and Cultural Life in Palestine
During the Ottoman Era

Ottoman Palestine Era Photograph Exhibition, 1850 - 1917

Palestine incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1517 and remained as one of the very important districts of the Empire until the end of the World War I. The Turkish rule over this country lasted four hundred years, almost uninterruptedly.

Unlike the conquerors before them Ottomans allowed Palestinian inhabitants to peacefully coexist, regardless of their religious or ethnic background. Therefore, for many centuries the Ottoman Empire has been considered as one of the most tolerant states in the world.

During the years of the Turkish rule, the population of Palestine represented an eclectic mix of people, including, of course, a majority Muslim and Christian Arab population, but also many minorities such as Jews, Circassians, Druses, Serbs, Assyrians, Armenians and Turks…etc. who enjoyed peaceful coexistence as a natural right. There were also disproportionately large groups of foreign missionaries, teachers and diplomats and fringe groups of individual devout Christians and Jewish refugees.

After the dissolution of the Empire these holy territories have witnessed new rulers and unfortunately many wars. However, some remarkable features of the Empire can still be observed in the course of the daily socio-cultural life in Palestine. The Ottoman concept is still in the historical memories of the Palestinian people with its all-bitter and sweeter aspects.

The idea of this exhibit is not to create nostalgic feelings to the past or not to make people miss the Ottoman times. The idea is to show the remarkable cultural ebb and flow, which characterized the years of the Ottoman period. The idea is to try to find out some hints from the Ottoman rule in this territory so that they could be feasible examples for the present day. The idea of this exhibition is to remember the longest stable period of the Palestinian history with respect.

The series of photographs are on loan from the collection of Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem. We estimate that today there are approximately 15.000 photographs in existence that were taken since the advent of the camera to the end of the Ottoman period in Palestine. Photography was used to document official occasions, travel writers and pilgrims used their cameras to record their visits and describe their experiences, and families from all walks of life posed for portraits.

Initially attracted by the Ottoman Turkish architectural imprint on monuments and structures in Palestine, the Jerusalem Turkish Consulate’s interest expanded to reflections of people as well as places. Searching the archives of Orient House, the Arab Studies Society and other local institutions, in addition to private family albums, the Turkish Consulate has uncovered a wealth of evidence regarding the social, economic and cultural life in Palestine before World War I. To date the Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem has acquired copies of 1,500 photographs.

Viewers can step back into time and witness samplings of daily life in Palestine through black and white photographs taken between the period of 1850 and 1917. With a focus on the faces, landscapes town scenes, views of holy places and monuments, the photographs reveal the hearth beat of the people. Livelihoods are being earned, children are attending school, boys are playing soccer, a new road is under construction, and people of all religions are praying at their respective religious sites. The photographs capture the fabric of these communities and showcase their diversity and sense of harmony.

Zuhal Yorgancıoglu Silk Route Fashion Shows in Pakistan by the Turkish Embassy

Silk Route Fashion Shows

Turkish Embassy has brought the splendor and wealth of the grand Turkish history and culture by the “Silk Route Fashion Shows” to Pakistan. In a week long trip prominent Turkish models presented the rich collections of Mrs. Zuhal Yorgancioglu, a world-known designer, ranging from authentic Bindalli (thousand branches) Caftans worn by Ottoman Sultans that are embroidered with gold and silver and specimens reflecting the wealth and splendor of the Harems of the Palaces of the Ottoman era to colorful silk dresses with Anatolian motifs and invaluable collage of old Turkish embroideries accompanied by modern night dresses of the Republic.

The costume collections are presented by the prominent Turkish models with traditional Turkish music keeping the mood. The Shows have been organized in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad with great success on 8th, 12th and 14th October in collaboration with Pakistan Services Limited with the sponsorship of Mobilink, Ladin Trade and Fair Organization Comp., STFA Construction Group and Turkish Airlines.

The proceeds are devoted to the flood affected children in Sind and Balochistan.

Mrs. Yorgancioglu, having presented her collections in 40 countries with more than 70 shows, is known as the artist who has woven the culture of East and West into a unique and authentic synthesis through the antique embroideries of the Turkish heritage. The “Silk Route Fashion Shows” consists of the following costumes that represent all the rich colors of the Silk Route to the shores of Bosphorus.

Bindalli – A Thousand Branches: The exquisite “Bindalli” costumes are from Mrs. Yorgancioglu’s personal collection of “caftans”. They reflect the centuries long artistic taste and splendor of Turkish women. Bindalli’s are hand embroidered with gold and silver threads and they usually represent gardens of roses, infamous Turkish tulips or carnations. These were traditional bridal costumes and were worn during wedding ceremonies which lasted for forty days and nights.

Anatolian folksong: Inspiration from the folk arts of Anatolia, the melting pot of many civilizations, reinterpreted here with the contemporary taste offering a colorful feast for the eye.
